At Caring Modern Dentistry, we strive to provide and offer almost all dental services that one could need to make things as convenient as possible for our patients. Not all dental offices in the Reidsville, North Carolina, area provide extensive dental treatments such as oral surgery. Luckily for our patients who need grafting due to tooth, bone, or tissue loss, they can be treated right here in our office.
There are multiple reasons why a patient would need to undergo oral surgery such as:
- Sleep apnea treatment
- Wisdom teeth removal
- Corrective jaw surgery
- Placement of dental implants for single-tooth restorations, bridges, or dentures
- Bone grafting
- Gum grafting
- Sinus Lifts
In our office, we are qualified and have undergone specific training to perfect two oral surgery procedures: bone and gum grafting. If you are unaware of what each of these oral surgery procedures is, please continue reading to learn more about how they can help you obtain your perfect smile.
After a tooth has been lost and due to the lack of stimulation that hits the jaw bone normally caused by chewing, the bone can start to deteriorate. It is also possible to experience bone loss in the most severe stages of periodontal disease. When bone density is lost, and a patient wants to take advantage of our permanent restorative procedures, we need to graft the bone back to its original form so the restorations will have a sturdy foundation.
Bone grafting consists of transplanting healthy bone to repair or rebuild damaged or deteriorated bone. The dentist will make a small incision where the graft is needed, then will attach the new bone to the original, deteriorated bone. Once the new bone is placed and surrounding tissues are sealed around it, new bone cells are created around the transplanted or grafted material to strengthen and build up the bone.
Once the new bone has fully fused to the original bone and the surgical site has healed, we will work together to move further into your restorative treatment plan.
Periodontal disease or gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue that is caused by poor oral hygiene to remove plaque. Once plaque has built up and hardened, an infection in the gums starts and spreads if not removed immediately. In the most severe stages of periodontal disease, our gum tissue starts to recede and fall away from the tooth also causing tooth loss.
When the gum tissue becomes severely infected and has receded, to promote healing, the removal of the infection is necessary and new gum tissue is to be placed. In the gum grafting procedure, we will remove healthy gum tissue from a non-infected portion in the mouth and sew on the tissue where the recession has happened.
Gum grafting promotes healing and restoration after experiencing severe periodontal disease and also gives the patient a natural, beautiful smile.
