DENTIST IN Reidsville
At Caring Modern Dentistry in Reidsville, North Carolina, we have a great team with years of experience in helping you to look after your teeth and your oral health. One of the things that we can help with is bone grafting. But what is it and why would you need it?
Bone grafting is a procedure that is performed to replace any bone loss from the jaw that helps to anchor the teeth. There are a couple of methods that can be used, but dental surgeries may be required for bone growth in the upper jaw. This is called a sinus augmentation, or a ridge augmentation may be required.
If you are missing some teeth or bone in your jaw, then bone grafting could be what you need in order to stimulate the growth of bones, to help to reshape your jaw. This can be a vital part of preparing to get dental implants. Implants are used to replace missing teeth, so for smile restoration, bone grafting could be an important part of that.
Your teeth are anchored into your jaw, where the bone in your jaw will surround the root of the tooth. This helps to keep it secure and makes everyday functions of your teeth possible, such as chewing. If you don’t have this, then the jaw won’t be able to help any natural teeth or any implants.
Bone loss in your jaw isn’t especially common, but it will be more likely if you have had something like a sports injury and had a tooth knocked out. It can also be a result of gum disease. No matter the reason for the bone loss in your jaw, if you want to get dental implants for a missing tooth or for veneers, then a dental bone graft would be required. We can do this, and help to restore the bone in your jaw to how it was before you lost your tooth, got gum disease, or other dental trauma. You can also use dental bone grafting to help to maintain the structure of your jaw, after a tooth has been removed. Whatever the reason, we can talk you through your options and help.
Bone Grafting Process
What happens during a bone graft? In many cases it will start with removing a piece of bone from a different part of the jaw, and in some cases, other parts of the body, and then transplanting that into the jaw. It can take some months from the transplanted bone to grow as required for the next stage, so there are a number of procedures to have. Once grown and healed, the next implant process is straightforward. There will be a titanium dental implant base put into the jaw. This can also take a few months to heal. When that is complete, an extension post will be put into the jaw. Molds of the teeth and the jawbone will then be taken, and the final step is inserting the final tooth in place.
Although there are a number of steps to the process, we can guide you every step of the way, and make sure that you are looked after every step of the way too. If you want to find out more about bone grafting, or to schedule an appointment, get in touch with us today.
