What To Do When You Have a Broken Tooth
When you break a tooth, the first thing to do is to try and locate the missing piece. We realize you may be in shock, but we can restore the original tooth if you can find the broken pieces and keep them moist. Keep the details moist by putting them in milk or warm water. Sometimes, it is possible to reinsert the broken pieces back into your mouth. If this is the case with you, place it in its spot and bite down on it with a towel or handkerchief. Keep it moist if you can’t get the piece back into your mouth!
Do what you can to stop any bleeding that may occur. The best way to do this, typically, is by applying pressure. In addition, you can use any over-the-counter pain medications to help relieve any pain you are feeling. Tylenol and Ibuprofen are great options! Just be sure to read the label carefully and follow the instructions. If there are sharp edges in your mouth, place a small piece of dental wax over the broken tooth, or you can use sugarless gum to do this. This will help you avoid tearing tissue in your mouth. A cold compress can also help with irritation and swelling. Call us as soon as you can to get help in our office.
